What do you love most about our residency program?
There is so much to love about the residency program. I think the program is defined by the term “ideal balance”. First and foremost you have incredibly complex surgeries and a high acuity patient population. These are the raw ingredients you need to become a top notch clinician. Being challenged shapes and prepares you for anything that may face you in your future career. But for complete training that alone does not suffice. In fact too much challenge can become detrimental and cause burnout. This is where balance is important. In order to become the top of your field you need to develop a strong fund of knowledge about anesthesia and so many of the other specialties you interact with. This is developed by having time to do intraoperative teaching, a strong and comprehensive curriculum and adequate time for self-study. Our program is more equipped to provide these three components than many other programs around the country. 1:1 attending coverage is more the rule than the exception at WMC, particularly for complex anesthesia cases. Having that ability, there is plenty of time for intra-op teaching and guaranteed relief for lectures. Also staffing reliably provides the ability to get relieved at end of day to have time for reading and to recharge your batteries. Resident wellness leads to resident and professional success, along with strong mentoring by an enthusiastic attending staff. We have specifically engineered our program around this premise, making our residents the centerpiece of our department.
